Gemeinsam schafft man so viel mehr… Und deshalb haben wir letztes Jahr beschlossen 3 % unseres Jahresgewinns jedes Jahr an ein anderes gemeinnütziges Projekt zu spenden, das sich für Menschen und für unsere Umwelt einsetzt.
Als erstes Projekt möchte ich die Earthbeat-Foundation vorstellen.
Earthbeat Foundation
Guya Merkle ist Schmuckdesignerin und Unternehmerin und hat trotzdem einen anderen Blick auf die Welt des Schmucks. Als sie 21 Jahre alt ist, übernimmt sie das Juwelierunternehmen des Vaters, der frühzeitig verstorben ist. Sie hat keine Ahnung von dem Geschäft und nach 2 Jahren steht sie vor dem Aus. Sie lässt sich nicht beirren und eignet sich Wissen zum Thema Edelsteine und Edelmetall an und kommt bei einem Besuch in einer Goldmine in Peru zu dem Entschluss, dass sie neue Wege beschreiten muss. Die Zustände in der Mine, die sie vorgefunden hat sind für Menschen und Umwelt verheerend. Guyas Reise in die Anden liegt inzwischen zehn Jahre zurück. Nach ihrer Rückkehr gründet sie die Organisation Earthbeat Foundation, um auf die Problematik bei der Goldgewinnung aufmerksam zu machen.
Dabei geht sie immer direkt von den Menschen aus, die im Kleinbergbau Gold abbauen.
Der Busia Distrikt in Uganda ist seit 1930 ein wichtiges Zentrum für den Goldabbau und die Goldproduktion. Der Goldabbau ist maßgeblich vom Kleinbergbau geprägt und die ArbeiterInnen schürfen das Gold manuell. Rohgold ist, wie andere Mineralien auch, eine limitierte Ressource und die Bestände schwinden durch den Abbau kontinuierlich. Die Bergleute leben von der Hand in den Mund und können nicht für ihre Existenz im Alter vorsorgen. Oft arbeiten die Menschen dort nur, da sie keine andere Möglichkeit sehen zu überleben, obwohl die Arbeit lebensgefährlich ist und starke Verschmutzung der Umwelt mit sich bringt.
Eine Alternative stellt da das Projekt “Heartbeat Honey” und “Heartbeat Garden” der Earthbeat-Foundation dar.
Die Landwirtschaft gehört zu den führenden Wirtschaftszweigen in Uganda und hat in Verbindung mit dem vorherrschenden günstigen Klima ein gutes Potenzial, als alternative Einkommensquelle für die Bergbaugesellschaften in Busia zu gedeihen. Die Auswirkungen des langjährigen Bergbaus in der Region haben jedoch das Land geschädigt und zum Verlust von lebenswichtigem Oberboden geführt. Dies behindert eine erfolgreiche Landwirtschaft in der Region.
Die Initiative “Heartbeat Garden” hilft den Bergbaugemeinden in Busia bei der Wiederherstellung degradierter Böden und erleichtert damit den Einstig in eine biodynamische Landwirtschaft als alternative Tätigkeit zu der Arbeit im Gold-Bergbau und trägt außerdem zur Ernährungssicherheit in diesen Gemeinden bei.
Earthbeat Foundation, Initiative “Heartbeat Honey”
Wo Pflanzen sind, sollten auch Bienen nicht weit sein, so entstand 2017 das Projekt “Heartbeat Honey”.
Zusammen mit dem Partner “The Hive” wurde in der Region Busia eine Bienenzucht eingerichtet. Es wurden Bienenstöcke angeschafft und die Menschen vor Ort geschult und betreut. Dadurch haben sie nicht nur deutlich höhere landwirtschaftliche Erträge, durch die Honigproduktion wurde eine langfristige Einnahmequelle geschaffen, die das Ökosystem erheblich verbessert.

Earthbeat Foundation
Guya Merkle is a jewelry designer and entrepreneur, but still has a different perspective on the world of jewelry. When she was 21, she took over the jewelry business from her father, who died early. She has no idea about the business and after 2 years she is about to go out. She is undeterred and acquires knowledge about gemstones and precious metals and when she visits a gold mine in Peru, she decides that she needs to break new ground. The conditions in the mine that she found are devastating for people and the environment. Guya's trip to the Andes is now ten years ago. After her return, she founded the organization Earthbeat Foundation to draw attention to the problem of gold mining.
She always starts directly from the people who mine gold in small-scale mining.
The Busia District of Uganda has been an important center for gold mining and gold production since the 1930's. Gold mining is largely characterized by small-scale mining and the workers mine the gold manually. Raw gold, like other minerals, is a limited resource and stocks are constantly dwindling as it is mined. The miners live hand to mouth and cannot provide for their livelihood in old age. Often the people there only work because they see no other way of surviving, although the work is life-threatening and entails heavy pollution of the environment.
An alternative is the Earthbeat Foundation’s “Heartbeat Honey” and “Heartbeat Garden” projects.
Agriculture is one of the leading economic sectors in Uganda and combined with the prevailing favorable climate has good potential to thrive as an alternative source of income for the mining companies in Busia. However, the effects of years of mining in the region have degraded the land and resulted in the loss of vital topsoil. This hinders successful agriculture in the region.
The Heartbeat Garden initiative is helping mining communities in Busia restore degraded land, facilitating the transition to biodynamic farming as an alternative activity to gold mining, and also contributing to food security in these communities.
Where there are plants, bees shouldn’t be far either, which is how the “Heartbeat Honey” project came about in 2017.
Together with the partner "The Hive" a beekeeping was set up in the Busia region. Beehives were purchased and the local people were trained and cared for. As a result, they not only have significantly higher agricultural yields, honey production has created a long-term source of income that significantly improves the ecosystem.
